Conversely, Cecabiotics (Bacillus cocktail) is effective against pathogens that thrive in the pH of the back part of the intestines (cecal tubes). The Phage Kit uses phages that target specific pathogens, while our probiotics suppress other pathogens and further protect beneficial bacteria. Our two probiotics were developed in the esteemed Hargis lab of the Poultry Science Department at the University of Arkansas.

Cecabiotics actively defends against common poultry pathogens. When used from Day 1 placement, Cecabiotics reduces high 7-day mortality by reducing the pathogen cascade. By enhancing mineral absorption and energy conversion, Cecabiotics strengthens bones, improves eggshell quality, improves FCR, and increases BWG without the risk of overdose. An innovative solution such as Cecabiotics has long been sought by the protein live production community.

Phage Kits

Advanced Removal of Pathogens for Animal Health and Performance

Plaza has successively combined Cecabiotics, our high-performance, wide-spectrum probiotic, with the first commercially available Bacteriophage for Live production from our partner Intralytix into a Phage Kit. We utilize their Salmonella and E. coli phage cocktails, but will eventually start utilizing their Enterococcus cocktails. Intralytix produces the bacteriophages in Maryland, so both components of the kit are manufactured in the USA.

The Kit ensures that Cecabiotics and Phage are used together, with the Phage rapidly attacking target pathogens and Cecabiotics continuing to suppress other pathogens from emerging. The synergy between the two provides a comprehensive approach: Phage quickly reduces specific harmful bacteria, while Cecabiotics fills the resulting void and prevents further pathogen growth through competitive exclusion. This synergistic mechanism limits the pathogen cascade, reduces intestinal damage, and ensures long-term control over harmful bacteria while protecting beneficial microbiota. We must emphasize that the good bacteria are not removed by our Phage Kit, thus the intestinal microflora is more stable than other products.

The combined Kit products are delivered as a dry-powder kit for water-line administration or as a liquid phage for spray applications in the hatchery and the environment. The Phage Kit is normally deployed in the first week after placement. While proven effective in prevention, it is also effective in the recovery of infected flocks that were not administered our products from day 1. Additionally, the phage kit is highly effective for end-of-flock Salmonella treatment to meet pre-harvest specifications.

What is Bacteriophage?

Bacteriophages (phages) are highly specific antimicrobials, grouped into combinations targeting the most pathogenic serotypes of E. coli, Salmonella, Enterococcus, Listeria, and others. Phages serve as the natural predators of bacteria. They attach to bacterial cells, inject their genetic material, and utilize the cell’s machinery for replication, ultimately causing the cell to burst and release new phages. Bacteriophages naturally target harmful bacteria and leave beneficial bacteria untouched, protecting the microbiome without posing any risk to humans. Lytic bacteriophages kill target bacteria efficiently without harming the microbiome, offering safety and targeted pathogen control.

Intralytix, Inc., in Columbia, Maryland, is a leader in bacteriophage-based products for food safety, health, veterinary, and environmental applications. Their pipeline includes FDA-cleared and USDA-approved products targeting antibiotic-resistant and foodborne pathogens.

Intralytix was the first globally to establish a Master Drug File with the FDA’s Center for Biologics Evaluation and Research for phage manufacturing suitable for human clinical applications. Additionally, it received the first FDA and USDA approvals for a phage product designed for food-safety applications. Plaza’s Biosolutions team has recently acquired the license for the highly regarded 11-strain Lactobacillus probiotic product that was also developed at the University of Arkansas. Historically, BioSolutions-B11 has globally exhibited premier performance against Salmonella and other pathogens that thrive in the front part of the small intestine (jejunum).  Do not confuse B11 with the two-strain version of this highly regarded product.  B11 is comprised of the exact 11 strains that impacted the Global market in preening spray applications, end-of-flock treatments, Salmonella control, etc.
